The calculator, which is used to quantify and interpret cradle to gate LCA environmental impacts of ready mixed concrete mixtures, is a perfect tool for the ready mixed industry as it allows for producers to immediately demonstrate how the use of slag cement can be beneficial to the environmental footprint of a structure. As stated by Ed Griffith, president of Slag Cement Association, industry professionals will also be able to use the LCA calculator to build points through the LEED green building rating system.
How the calculator works is that it first engages the user to choose from a list of pre-set concrete mixes. The percentage can then be altered for the percent of slag cement that is included in the mix. As the results generate a picture of the impact for baseline and slag cement-modified mixes in real-time, it gives the users the ability to apply region specific fixed custom mixes based on their environmental impact in relation to that particular region.
