Internet of Things (IoT) to Pave the Way for Future Engineers

In today’s technological day and age, we are witnessing an ever-complex interconnection of physical things being seemed together by needle and thread of the IoT (Internet of Things). IoT applications are now seen in cars, applicances, fitness wearables and more. They are seen in GPS app that provides us with real time traffic information. The construction industry is no exception.

More and more we are seeing sensors and intelligent controllers that are embedded into objects such as concrete that can then be worn on our bodies. Rather than using a physical log book for instance, which is both tedious and susceptible to human error, artificial intelligence is gathering and communicating our data. Just as we do with electricity when we plug in our devices into sockets, we expect the internet to provide instantaneous functions.

We see “cloud” applications becoming increasingly more dominant in the workplace, as we collaborate through it to generate and share our documents with the simple click of a button. Our workplace is progressively advancing as we locate internships and other opportunities online. We seek out employment opportunities by searching the web and electronically submitting our resumes.

To make all of this possible, we use interconnected smartphones, tablets and computers and as we continue down this path, it is estimated that by 2020, there will be more than twenty billion IoT connected devices with that number will tripling by 2025. A global economy means that organizations across all spectrums are requiring to always be improving digital accessibilities, connectivity and productivity. With a digital focus on interconnected devices, technological and economic barriers are lowered and innovation, increased prosperity and ultimately, quality of life enhanced.

Civil engineering jobs now involve the use of mobile applications for their smart structures, IoT in the construction and corrosion detection of concrete structures and real-time wireless sensing capabilities of the properties of concrete (such as that offered through the Smart Concrete solution). In order to meet the significant and growing demands of the digital world, smart systems engineers are rapidly growing in demand. We rely heavily on these individuals to have the sophistication and up-to-date training, skills and knowledge for their problem-solving expertise.

It is clear that the lucrative jobs of the future will demand that all engineers have a strong understanding of cyber-physical technologies. Teaching and learning tools like Arduino and Raspberry Pi are of growing importance to master for students. Currently, there are free resources available for both.
